In October 1911, when Evans was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Bala branch. Three years later, upon completing his apprenticeship, he transferred to Machynlleth branch as a clerk. His manager there described him as 'quite exemplary.'

Evans left the bank to go on military service in January 1916. In September 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal, and in June 1918 he was commissioned into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Second Lieutenant David William Evans was killed in action in France on 8 October 1918. He was 24 years old.
