John Ernest Dixon was born in Battersea, London, on 14 December 1894, the son of Frederick William Dixon, an accountant's clerk, and his wife Alice Elizabeth. In July 1911, when he was 16, he went to work for The National Bank in London.
During the First World War Dixon left his job at the bank's London King's Cross branch to join the army. Serjeant John Ernest Dixon of the London Regiment was killed in action in Belgium on 6 December 1917. He was 22 years old.
