James Barrow Davies was born in Lancashire on 11 October 1885, the son of James Davies, a plumber, and his wife Frances. From November 1912 he worked for London County & Westminster Bank. Outside work, he was a territorial soldier.

On the outbreak of the First World War Davies was mobilised, leaving his job as a telephone switchboard operator at the bank's London head office to go on active service.

Rifleman James Barrow Davies of the King's Royal Rifle Corps was killed in action on 14 September 1914, at the Battle of Mons. He was 28 years old and left a widow, May Daisy, whom he had married in 1909.
