Harold Ernest George Double was born in London in 1896, the son of Johnson William Double, a commercial clerk, and his wife Emily Eliza. In February 1915 he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

Just two months later, in April 1915, Double left his job at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Middlesex Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was 19 years old.

Harold would have been my great uncle. He was the youngest brother of my grandfather Johnson W. Double 39 and they had another brother Charles F. Double 29. All three died during WWI. Our family are very proud of them all. I have visited their graves/memorial in Belgium and Germany.
