William Paterson Caldwell was born in Leith, Edinburgh on 13 May 1890, the son of Richard and Jeanie Caldwell. In March 1907, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Partick branch. In December 1909 he transferred to the bank's Clydebank branch, and became a clerk there the following March. He transferred to the bank's London office in July 1912.

During the First World War Caldwell joined the army, serving as a Corporal in the London Regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 28 March 1918. He was 27 years old and left a widow, Helen, whom he had married in August 1915.
