Martin Henry Child was born in Reading in 1897, the son of Thomas Child, a draper's assistant, and his wife Nancy. In December 1914 he went to work for Parr's Bank.
In June 1916 Child left his job at the bank's London Cavendish Square branch to go on military service. He became an air mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps, and eventually a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. He died of double pneumonia on 16 November 1918, several days after the signing of the Armistice. He was 21 years old.
