Kenneth Herbert Clarke was born in Glasgow on 9 January 1894, the only son of Kenneth Gourlay Clarke, manager of a thread factory, and his wife Jean Bell Cameron Clarke. In September 1909, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Johnstone branch. He became a clerk there in September 1912, and a teller in April 1915.
During the First World War Clarke served in the army. Lieutenant Kenneth Herbert Clarke of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was killed in action in France on 30 September 1917. He was 23 years old.
