George Walter Coucher was born in Wimbledon, London, on 11 October 1894, the son of George Robert Coucher and his wife Clara. In July 1913, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In November 1915 Coucher left his job as a clerk at the bank's Foreign branch in London to join the army. By 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France on 16 April 1918. He was 23 years old and left a widow, Phyllis Emmaline.
