George Cooper Calder was born in Leith, Edinburgh on 3 February 1897, the third son of John Cooper Calder, a house factor, and his wife Agnes. In January 1913, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Canonmills branch. In February 1914 he transferred to the bank's discount office at head office in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.

During the First World War Calder joined the army, serving as a Private in the Seaforth Highlanders. He died on 15 December 1917 of wounds received in action on the Western Front. He was 20 years old.
