Frederick Charles Corley was born in 1897, the son of Thomas Fulton Corley, a civil servant, and his wife Katherine Elizabeth. Two of Corley's elder brothers were bank clerks, and when the time came for Corley himself to begin a career he, too, went into banking, working for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London head office. He also became a member of the bank's staff sports club.

In August 1914 Corley joined the army, serving as a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He died in France on 18 September 1916. He was 19 years old.
