Edward West Clifford was born on 3 June 1889, the son of Edward Clifford of the Dublin Port and Docks Board and his wife Anne. From December 1908 Clifford worked for The National Bank at its Limerick branch.

In July 1915 Clifford left the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was killed in action at La Boiselle on the Somme on 14 July 1916. He was 27 years old and left a widow, Claire.
