Douglas Chester was born on 17 August 1891, the son of Herbert Edward Chester, a solicitor's clerk, and his wife Grace Ann. In December 1908, when Chester was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Croydon branch. He remained at Croydon as a clerk after the completion of his three-year apprenticeship, but later moved to Hythe branch, and then to Folkestone branch.

During the First World War Chester joined the army, serving as a Serjeant in the Royal Fusiliers. He died in France on 24 April 1917. He was 25 years old.
