Charles Cunningham was born in Edinburgh on 23 May 1898, the son of Robert Cunningham, a bank clerk, and his wife Mary. In September 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for his father's bank, National Bank of Scotland, as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Portobello branch.

During the First World War Cunningham joined the army, serving as a Private in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He died on 14 September 1917. He was 19 years old.
