Charles George Cheyne was born in 1896, the son of Charles Cheyne, a police officer, and his wife Margaret. In April 1912, when he was 15 years old, Cheyne went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Hamilton branch.
During the First World War Cheyne joined the army and was commissioned into the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Second Lieutenant Cheyne was killed in France on 14 April 1918. He was 21 years old.
