Arthur Bourne Carpenter was born on 7 October 1889 in Woodchurch, Kent, the son of George Edward Carpenter, a farm worker, and his wife Fanny. In November 1906, when he was 17 years old, Carpenter went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Carpenter became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
During the first months of the First World War, Carpenter left his job as a clerk at the bank's Brighton branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action on 28 September 1915, during the first days of the Battle of Loos. He was 25 years old.
