Alfred Walter Chapman was born on 29 October 1887, the son of Walter James Chapman and his wife Rachel. In May 1907, when he was 19 years old, Chapman went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Chapman became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

In February 1917 Chapman left his job as a clerk at the bank's Henley-on-Thames branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Worcestershire Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 30 May 1918. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Marguerite Blanche Mary, whom he had married in September 1915.
