Maurice John Barrett was born on 13 January 1898, the son of Edmond Thomas Barrett, a policeman and (later) customs officer, and his wife Maria. He was educated at the College of St. Ignatius, London. In January 1915 he started working for The National Bank.

During the First World War Barrett left his job in the bank's London head office secretary's department to join the army, serving as a Rifleman in the London Regiment, posted to the Royal Irish Rifles. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 19 August 1917. He was 19 years old.
