Died: 9 April 1918

 

John Burt was born in 1899, the son of John Burt, a printer's compositor, and his wife Elizabeth. In January 1915, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Anderston branch.

In April 1917, a month after his 18th birthday, Burt joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was posted to France at the end of March 1918 and was killed there only a few days later, on 9 April 1918. He was 19 years old.

Thank you so much for posting this tribute.  John is my Grandad’s cousin and I’ve managed to find out quite a bit of information on John through Ancestry but I don’t have a photo?  Is that something you have or I’d love to know any more information you have on him.  I feel quite attached to John now as I don’t think anyone else in our family knew much about him or his story, he was an only child and his parents story also seems to stop with him too.  Very sad.  I want to give him a voice when older family member haven’t been able to.

He was similar age to my Grandad who had just received his letter to serve just before the armistice, my direct family history could have been very different.
