John Adamson Black was born on 30 August 1896, the son of the Reverend A Wilson Black, a minister in the United Free Church, and his wife Isabella.
In June 1912, when Black was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Newton Stewart branch. He completed his apprenticeship and became a clerk there in July 1915.
During the First World War Black joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action on the Somme on 1 November 1916. He was 20 years old.
