James Tod Brown was born in Leith in 1896, the son of James Tod Brown, a spirit dealer, and his wife Jane. He began working for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at Edinburgh Leith Walk branch in June 1912, when he was 16. In August of the same year he transferred to the bank's North Leith branch.

During the First World War Brown joined the army, and by 1918 was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He died of wounds in France on 27 April 1918.
