James Simson Branthwaite was born in Glasgow on 4 April 1889, the son of William Branthwaite, a civil servant, and his wife Elizabeth. In August 1906 he started working for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at the bank's Manchester Oxford Road branch. He was promoted to a clerkship in 1911, and in the same year was transferred to the bank's head office in Manchester. He moved to Oldham branch in 1912 and then returned to head office in 1915.

Branthwaite joined the army in July 1915, serving as a Private in The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He died in France on 2 August 1917, the result of gunshot wounds on both legs. He was 28 years old and left a widow, Elizabeth, whom he had married in November 1915.
