Herbert Bainton

Bank: London County & Westminster Bank

Place of work: Godalming branch

Died: 14 May 1918

Herbert Quentin Bainton was born in Yorkshire on 13 August 1895, the son of Thomas and Lydia Kate Bainton. He was educated at Christ's Hospital, Horsham.

In August 1912, just after his 17th birthday, Bainton went to work for London County & Westminster Bank, where his elder brother Thomas already worked.

Both brothers served in the army during the First World War. Thomas was killed in Gallipoli in August 1915 while serving in The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). The following year Herbert left his job as a clerk at the bank's Godalming branch to join the army. He initially joined his brother's regiment, but later served as a Signaller in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

In 1918 Bainton was wounded in action. He was brought home to England, where he died of his injuries in Clitheroe, Lancashire, on 14 May 1918. He was 22 years old.
