Henry Edward Burnham was born in Brixton, London, in 1888, the son of Richard Henry Burnham, a telegraph engineer, and his wife Clara. In November 1908 he started work for Coutts & Co.
In November 1915 Burnham left his job as a clerk in the bank's securities department to join the army, initially as a Private, and later as a Rifleman, in the London Regiment. He served in France and Belgium from 1916, taking part in the Battle of Arras and the Third Battle of Ypres. He was killed in action on 15 August 1917. He was 29 years old.
