Arthur Ball was born in Didsbury on 3 April 1897, the son of George and Esther Ball, both schoolteachers. In April 1913, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Manchester & County Bank.
In September 1914 Ball left his job in the bank's Manchester Withington branch to join the army, initially serving in the Manchester Regiment. In April 1915 he was commissioned into the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). He later joined the Royal Flying Corps, earning his flying certificate in April 1916.
Second Lieutenant Arthur Ball of the Royal Flying Corps and King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) was accidentally killed while flying in Egypt on 19 February 1917. He was 19 years old.
