Alfred Barnard was born in Norfolk in 1877, the son of Edgar Barnard, a farmer, and his wife Maria. In November 1899 Barnard started work as a messenger at the London head office of The National Bank.

In September 1903 Barnard married Agnes Woodham. They had two sons together, Leslie and Stanley.

During the First World War Barnard joined the army, serving as a Private in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He died of sickness on 1 April 1917. He was 40 years old.
