William Wentworth Axtell was born in Islington on 2 January 1892, the son of William Axtell, a Post Office employee, and his wife Mary Jane Mark Axtell.

After leaving school Axtell initially became a boy clerk in the Post Office, but in March 1912 he took a job with London County & Westminster Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.

During the First World War Axtell left his job as a clerk at the bank's Foreign branch in London to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action at Monchy-au-Bois, France, on 4 May 1916. He was 24 years old.
