William Farquhar Allen was born in Gravesend on 6 January 1892, the son of Edward John Allen, a Thames river pilot, and his wife Jane Maria. After leaving school he initially worked as a clerk for a merchant marine company, but by 1912 was a clerk for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Princes Street office. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club, and played in the staff football team.
Allen joined the army during the first year of the First World War, and at the time of his death in 1916 was serving as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He died on 20 September 1916, when he was 24 years old.
