John Francis Aitken was born to English parents in the United States of America in 1891. In July 1896, when Aitken was 5 years old, his father James Frederic Aitken died. Shortly afterwards he, his mother Harriett and younger sister Dorothy returned to England to live in Harriett's home town, Bakewell. In 1907 Aitken went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank.
During the First World War Aitken left his job at the bank's Matlock branch to join the army. Second Lieutenant John Francis Aitken of the Lancashire Fusiliers was killed in action on the Western Front on 6 September 1917. He was 26 years old.
