Hugh Douglas Archard was born on 26 February 1890, the son of Charles and Charlotte Archard. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank as a junior clerk at its London Fenchurch Street branch. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.
Early in the First World War Archard joined the army. On 4 September 1915, while serving in France as a Corporal in the Rifle Brigade, he was shot and killed by a German sniper. He was 25 years old.
