Douglas Askew

Douglas Askew was born in Radcliffe in 1897, the son of William Askew, an engineer's foreman, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1913, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank, working at its branches in Ardwick Green, Moss Side and Ramsbottom. In 1915 he transferred to the bank's Bury branch.

In November 1915 Askew joined the army, serving as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 6 February 1917.
