Donald Ambrose was born in Loughton on 22 October 1896, the youngest of three sons of Jethro Ambrose, a draper's shopkeeper and later an auctioneer, and his wife Charlotte Louise. He was educated at Bancroft's School, Woodford Green.

In December 1913, when Ambrose was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank, but two years later he left his job at the bank's Eastbourne branch to join the army, initially in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). In August 1916 he transferred to the London Regiment, and was posted to France. In spring 1917 he was commissioned. Second Lieutenant Donald Ambrose died in France on 21 March 1918. He was 21 years old.

Simon, many thanks for your comment. I'm afraid everything we know about Donald Ambrose is already included here, but I'm going to add the information that he was educated at Bancroft's School, which we didn't know.
